Diary of the Cheshire Ring 2014.

A short diary written by Andy Manley who hired Gloria this summer to complete the Cheshire Ring with his wife and daughter. Photos by Joep & Martine who took Gloria on the same route in 2012.

Started out from Bridgewater marina onĀ Monday 4th at 1530. Cruised to Dunham arriving 2100.

Tuesday 5th left mooring at 0700. Filled with water at Thorn Marine, good days' cruising, weather perfect, moored at Moorfield Bridge 1700. Checked oil.

Wednesday 6th beautiful day again, left mooring at 0900. Excellent day cruising, really made good time, arrived at Anderton Boat Lift 1330, no good moorings so after a quick look around moved on. Arrived at Marston Lion Salt Works at 1615, fed in the Salt Barge - very good!!

Thursday 7th was a 0900 start and another blue sky. Cruised to Kings Lock, continued onto Wheelock mooring at 1700.

Friday 8th cloudy but humid clearing later for cruising to Rode Heath stopping at 1400 and moored because of the huge thunderstorm - end of blue sky!! Made up by a good meal at the Broughton Arms.

Saturday 9th 0630 start, continued onto the Macclesfield canal, stopped at 1300, another big storm, moved on a bit further to moor outside the Rising Sun at 1630.

Sun started the day on Sunday 10th then RAIN, BIG RAIN. Set off at 0900 after checking oil. Rained nearly all day but good scenery and little traffic. Made for Fools Nook pub to find it closed - probably for ever so no pub food tonight, too late to move on being 1600 and all very wet!!!

Monday 11th started at 0800 and dry. Cruised to Macclesfield for a couple of hours shopping, stocked up with essentials and moved to Marple Junction stopping at 1600, the moorings were VERY busy.

Tuesday 12th took a trip to Bugsworth Basin - well worth the effort, returning to Marple Junction for 1700, went for meal at the Ring O Bells - recommended with very good food.

Wednesday 13th drizzly. Set off at 0700 ready for a long day, not wrong, had to keep moving until 2045 and found a great mooring after lock 4 of the Ashton locks just before Bridge 7.

Thursday 14th blue sky and warm. Set off through the rest of the Manchester locks. Midday was drizzle and some heavy showers, locks easy enough to do but time consuming unlocking and re-locking the mechanisms, finally through and in the open again. Continued on past the Ship Canal and stopped at the Trafford Centre - MASSIVE! Cruised on coming to and passing the home base marina and stopping at 1915 outside the Old Boat House, in there for a meal - superb.

Friday 15th mill pond smooth canal and blue sky at 0600, checked oil. Set off 0900 heading for Dover Lock, intended to lunch at Dover Lock Inn, got there to find boats moored in the winding hole, had to go just outside Wigan to turn, then found the pub has just changed hands and no food on. Went back to the Boat House and moored up for the last night.

Saturday 16th set off at 1000 for the Bridgewater marina, holiday over. A fantastic time was had on the adventure that is The Cheshire Ring!
